Mortal Kombat 11 (MK11) is a fighting video game developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. Running on the Unreal Engine 3, it is the eleventh main installment in the Mortal Kombat series and a sequel to 2015's Mortal Kombat X. Announced at The Game Awards 2018, the game was released in North America and Europe on April 23, 2019 for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
In late January 2019 it was reported that the Switch version was delayed in Europe, and was released on May 10, 2019. The game received generally favorable reviews from critics, who praised the gameplay, story, and improved netcode, although there was some criticism for the presence of microtransactions and over-reliance on grinding. Mortal Kombat 11 tells about the directed and cinematic story modes that have the fate of the heroes from Mortal Kombat X. Like the previous two games in the series, Mortal Kombat 11 is a 2.5D fighting game. Alongside the returning Fatalities and Brutalities, new gameplay features are introduced, such as Fatal Blows and Krushing Blows. Fatal Blows are special moves similar to the X-ray moves in Mortal Kombat X. Like X-ray moves, Fatal Blows deal a large amount of damage, but unlike them, they only become available when a player's health drops below 30%, and can only be performed once per match. While playing Mortal Kombat 11, we take part in duels fought in various arenas. Dynamic clashes are extremely bloody, and their brutality is emphasized by spectacular fatalities, i.e. special blows crowning the fight. The authors provide us with a wide range of warriors - in addition to old friends such as Raiden or Scorpion, the list also includes completely new faces. In addition, a special Custom Character Variations system has been implemented in the game, allowing individual players to be adapted to individual preferences. The gameplay is a bit slower than in the previous part of the series, and other changes have also been made. X-Ray blows have been replaced with Fatal Blow attacks, which can only be performed when our character has few health points left. There are also Crushing Blows, activated automatically if certain conditions are met - for example, when Scorpion hits the enemy with a spear from the full length of the arena, or when we finish a combo with one, demanding special attack.
Gameplay
Krushing Blows are a special cinematic variation of a given special move, triggered when certain requirements are met, most like Brutalities in the previous game. Also new to the series is a Flawless Block mechanic, which allows for a comeback window after blocking an attack with precise timing. Another returning finisher is Mercy, last seen in Mortal Kombat 3, where the winning player can opt to revive their opponent, giving them a small amount of life. In addition to the story campaign, a lot of single-player content has been prepared. The classic Towers are back with a number of challenges, as well as the Towers of Time, which add variety to the duels with various modifiers and external factors. They even allow you to fight bosses - during them, three players take turns to fight one extremely strong enemy. In Towers of Time, we earn rewards and item upgrades. It is worth noting that all the equipment does not give you an advantage in online gameplay. There is also a Vault mode, in which we explore the ruins and open new treasure chests. In online mode, we fight ranked or less obliging duels - in the former, we cannot use our own variations of the heroes. There is also a tournament system that allows you to conveniently organize a serious competition with your friends.
